Langfossen Waterfall
At the end of the Åkrafjorden, three kilometers from the tiny village of Fjæra, there is one of the pearls of Southwestern Norway, where you must make a stop.
Langfossen waterfall originates at an altitude of 612 meters flowing out of Tjørna lake.
This is the fifth highest waterfall in Norway, and the second highest water consumption. During snowmelt, the width of the stream reaches 80 meters.
There is no steep drop in Langfossen, the water flows along the rocky ledges of a very steep mountain slope, forming many beautiful rapids.
A cloud of water dust constantly hangs over the stream, forming bizarre swirls.
After passing under the road, before falling into the Akrafjord, the water forms another cascade.
The power of the stream varies depending on the time of year. Now, at the end of summer, there is not much water.
The huge height difference and a dozen full-water lakes that feed the waterfall have repeatedly attracted the attention of power engineers. However, these projects are invariably rejected by the government, no matter how high the benefits they promise.
The rivers and lakes that feed Langfossen do not have any hydro structures, it is one of the few waterfalls in Norway that are in a natural state.
In March 2011 the CNN Budget Travel program included Langfossen in the list of the ten most beautiful waterfalls in the world.
The beauty of the waterfall has one big drawback: it is located on the Northern slope of the mountain range, so most of the year it is in the shade. In summer the best time to visit is morning or evening.
For hiking enthusiasts, there is a walking route to the top of the waterfall. The scenic path used to be used to deliver cheese from the Langfoss støl mountain farm. You can climb to a height of 640 meters, where you can enjoy wonderful views. The route is 1,740 meters long and takes up to an hour and a half to reach the top point.
The waterfall is located next to the e134 highway 95 kilometers East of Haugesund.
Next to the waterfall there is a parking lot and a very small cafe where you can enjoy ice cream or a hamburger. It also sells Souvenirs, has a toilet and a picnic area.
