Fløibanen Funicular, Bergen

At the end of Vetrlidsallmenningen street is the lower station of The fløibanen funicular, where we had to climb to the observation platform of mount Fløyen. There are a lot of people who want to do this, so I had to stand for about half an hour.I think that in June and July this time can be much longer. By the way, there is a path right behind the station where you can walk up the mountain if You don't want to waste time in the queue.

The idea of building a funicular was put forward by member of Parliament John Lund in 1895, but work began only in 1914. The funicular was opened on January 15, 1918. The lower station is located at an altitude of 18 above sea level, the height difference is 300 meters, the length of the line is 850 meters. Cars cover this distance in 3 minutes 20 seconds without stopping, with stops-about 6 minutes. In its original form, the funicular worked until September 2002, when a complete reconstruction of the road was carried out, and now the line has modern, beautiful and comfortable cars.

From above came a blue car, filled to the brim. However, we did not get on it, we had to wait for the next one.

There are only two cars - when one goes up, the other goes down, their capacity is 80 passengers. After 15 minutes, a red car came for the number "01".

In the city, at the lower station, the road is hidden in a tunnel.

After a hundred and fifty meters, the line comes to the surface under Promsgate street. Here, at an altitude of 59 meters, is the first stop, Skansen Park (Skansenparken).

We cross another street, Fjellveien. The next stop, at an altitude of 114 meters, you can get off here if you want to wander along the shady paths of the Fløyen mountain slope.

Another short tunnel, beyond which the passing loop begins.

This place is located exactly in the middle of the road, where the cars always meet, as they are connected by a single cable and move simultaneously. The word "funicular" comes from the ancient Greek "funicula" - rope.

Above the passing loop is the Skansemyren station (181 meters), to the left of the road you can go to the path that serpentines up the slope to the observation platform.

On the right, along Norde Skansemyren, you can reach the Skansemyren idrettsplass municipal stadium in 5 minutes on foot.

From here begins the most interesting section, which offers wonderful views of Bergen lying below.

This is also the steepest part of the road, if you look down at the path you have traveled, it is breathtaking.

Finally, we arrive at the top station, located at an altitude of 320 meters.

Fløibanen funicular is open from 7: 30 to 23: 00 on weekdays, and opens half an hour later on weekends. The ticket office is open from April to September from 8 to 21: 30, and closes an hour later in June and August. Outside of the tourist season, from October to March, from 9 to 19. Departure every 15 minutes from 9 to 19, early in the morning and in the evening, the cars run at intervals of half an hour.
