Head of Barcelona Sculpture
Columbus Boulevard originates from the avant-garde monument named the Head of Barcelona (La Cabeza de Barcelona), sometimes called the Face of Barcelona (La Cara de Barcelona). The sculpture project was developed by the famous representative of pop art, American graphic artist Roy Lichtenstein, and this miracle was sculpted by sculptor Diego Rahado in 1991-1992. The monument was erected as part of a large-scale urban reconstruction program in preparation for the 1992 Olympic Games.
The monument has a height of 15 meters and a total weight of about 90 tons, it consists of eight concrete elements fastened with stainless steel brackets. The surface of the sculpture is covered with ceramic tiles and depicts a woman's face in a very peculiar way. The artist's work traces the motives of the great representatives of Catalan art - the face resembles surreal paintings Salvador Dali, ceramic mosaics pay tribute to Antonio Gaudi, who widely used ceramics to decorate his buildings.
