Palazzo SchininĂ , Ragusa

Next to the cathedral, across the intersection of Via Roma and Corso Italia, is the palace of the Marquis Mario Schin Cosentini, descended from the Sant'Elia family, built in the late 18th century in the Baroque style. We can still see his coat of arms on the gates of the arch leading to the courtyard.: a shield with the image of a comet and a lily, crowned with a crown. According to the project, the palace was supposed to occupy the entire block, but its southern part was not fully built. After the death of the Marquis in the first half of the 19th century, the palace was inherited by his sons. One of them was interested in botany and built a garden of exotic plants in the courtyard. In 1926, the northern wing was purchased by the state and the prefecture of the new province of Ragusa was located there. In 1949, Marchioness Carlotta Skinina sold the south wing to the parish priest of the church of San Giovanni Battista, and a seminary was established there. The palace now houses the Diocese of Ragusa (Curia vescovile).
