Ragusa. Belvedere Via Roma

At the end of Via Roma there is a semicircular platform overhanging the cliff. The site offers an impressive panoramic view of the deep ravine Cava San Leonardo (in Italian, "Сava" means excavation, quarry). A rather modest streamlet flows along its bottom, which practically dries up most of the year. Nevertheless, a chain of dams with water wheels was built here, which is why this place was named "Mill Valley". The water energy was used both directly to produce flour from grain and to drive pumps that supplied water to irrigate fields. During the period of industrialization, hydropower was replaced by steam and then electricity, and in the early 20th century the mills were abandoned. Now you can only see their ruins, along which there is a tourist walking route.
