Reus. Plaça de Catalunya, Casa Fàbregas, Reus
Having walked from the Plaça de la Puríssima Sang a block along Raval del Pallol, we will go out to Plaça de Catalunya. Here is the building of the Archaeological Museum (on the left in the photo), which bears the name of the Catalan historian and doctor, a native of Reus, Salvador Vilaseca (Museu Àrqueologic Salvador Vilaseca).
In front of the museum we see a mansion in the Noucentisme style, known as Casa Fàbregas, built in 1920 by Josep Simó Bofarull. The house belonged to philanthropist and Republican politician Evarist Farbegas. In 1930, Fabregas proclaimed the creation of the Second Republic from the balcony of this building, and a year later he was elected mayor of Reus. Farbegas made a lot of efforts to preserve the city's history, in particular, the palace of the Marquis de Tamarit (Palau dels marquesos de Tamarit) was restored with his personal funds, after which a cultural center (Centre de Lecture) was opened there.
There is a small shady garden on the square, where there is a monument to the poet and playwright Joaquin Maria Bartrina (1850-1880), a native of Reus, a realist and the founder of the Catalan avant-garde.
