Fuente de Europa, Nerja
At the bottom of Plaza de los Cangrejos, on the seafront, stands a monument symbolizing the friendship, unity, strength, and vitality of the countries of the European Union. Its history began in 2001, when the Nerja Municipal Council sent letters to the ambassadors of EU countries with a proposal: each country would make a 50 x 80-centimeter stone slab with its name, which would be installed on the monument. The proposal was made by Nerja Municipal Councilor Walter Dietrich Greber, inspired by the idea of the artist Walter Zupan, who created a similar monument in Austria. Today, we can see a rectangular column with 16 slabs attached with copper brackets: 15 were sent from countries that were then part of the EU, and the 16th was made in Nerja. Water was supposed to flow from the joints between the slabs, which is why the monument is called a fountain, although this was never realized..
