Frederiksborg Prison Tower

The S-shaped bridge ends with a tower with a portal leading to the courtyard of the castle. It was built in the early 16th century and is often referred to as the gatehouse, but its real name is Fangetårnet, which translates as prisoners' tower or prison tower. The tower and its basements were used as a prison for criminals and political prisoners. The conditions here were very harsh, and prisoners were kept in damp and cold solitary cells without windows. In 1859, the prison was converted into a museum and opened to the public. Today, here you can see a collection of portraits of Danish kings and queens, as well as other historical artifacts.
