Lion Gate and Patio, Seville Alcázar

The main gate of the Alcazar Puerta del León is located on the Plaza del Triunfo, opposite the southern facade of the Archivo de Indidas. The ticket office is located in the Patio Banderas, the entrance to which is located in the eastern corner of the square, a ticket can also be purchased online on the official website (realalcazarsevilla.cliqueo.es), as well as in numerous tourist offices in Seville. The Lion's Gate is the only entrance for tourists, and here you have to stand in a long queue. The name of the gate comes from a polychrome bas-relief depicting a lion with gilded attributes of Christianity and monarchy. It is not known for certain when this panel appeared, for the first time it can be seen in Richard Ford's drawings of 1832. In 1896, the dilapidated bas-relief was replaced with a tiled panel by Manuel Tortosa and Fernandez Until the 19th century, this portal was referred to as Puerto de la Montaneria, which translates as "The Hunters' Gate", since King Pedro of Castile and his retinue went hunting through them. This is confirmed by the remains of bas-reliefs depicting animals. Behind the gate there is a courtyard, at the end of which we see three arched passages in the wall of the palace of the Almohad dynasty, who ruled Andalusia since the 12th century. In 1625, the Corral de Monteria pavilion (Hunting Pavilion) was built in the courtyard, where theatrical performances were held. The pavilion burned down on May 3, 1691. At the end of the right wall of the courtyard is the entrance to the Sala de Justicia and Patio del Yeso.
