Hall of Justice, Seville Alcázar

The Sala de la Justicia is located in the left corner of the Patio del León, through which tourists enter the complex. It serves as a kind of lobby before entering the garden of the Almohad Palace. It is believed that it was built between 1340 and 1350 by order of King Alfonso XI of Castile in honor of the victory of the Christian army over the Moors in the famous Battle of Rio Salado in 1340. It is claimed that this is the first Mudejar-style structure built by Christians on the territory of the Palace, however, in many sources the same room is referred to as the Council of Viziers Hall (Mexuar) in the Muslim era, moreover, it has a similar architecture to the Comares Hall in the Alhambra Palace in Granada. The confusion arose because of the coat of arms of the Orden de la Banda, established by Alfonso XI. The Muslim Council Hall was rebuilt by Christians in the Mudekhar style and was probably originally used for the same purpose. Today, the name comes from an unconfirmed hypothesis that Alfonso XI's son, King Pedro I, used the courtroom. If you are in the Palace on a guided tour, the guide will surely tell you a terrible story: it was in this hall that Pedro I, in a fit of jealousy, personally killed his stepbrother, for which he received the nickname "Cruel". To confirm this legend, you will be shown dark spots on the marble floor by the fountain, calling them traces of blood.
