There are a wide variety of models available, from miniature "pocket" canisters to large backpack tanks.

Compact fire-fighting devices have taken many different forms throughout history, from glass containers filled with fire-extinguishing liquid to modern automatic powder fire extinguishers in the shape of a ball.

The first foam fire extinguishers had a hand pump and a hose with a bell, and two people were needed to use them. Then a chemical reaction was used to create pressure - it was enough to push the lever once, which broke the flask with acid inside the cylinder.
