Funicular to Monte Igueldo, San Sebastian
Funicular that takes passengers up to mount Igeldo (Funicular Monte Igueldo on the map), the oldest in the Basque Country and the third in Spain. The lift was opened on August 25, 1912 in the presence of Queen Maria Kristina at the same time as the amusement Park on Igeldo mountain.
The author of the project is engineer Emilio Huici, the construction was carried out under the supervision of Severiano Goñi. The equipment was manufactured by the Swiss company Von Roll Fonderie de Berne and, as you can see, works properly to the present day.
The lower station is located at an altitude of 11 meters above sea level, the upper 162, so the elevation constant is 151 meters.
The length of the line is 312 meters, the track width is 1 meter.
In the middle of the route, there is a siding where wagons running in opposite directions meet.
The car can accommodate 50 people and covers the distance in 3 minutes.
The funicular is driven by a 125 HP electric motor.
The road is surrounded on both sides by dense thickets, only occasionally opening gaps.
In winter, the funicular's opening hours are from 11 to 18, in spring from 11 to 20, and in summer from 10 to 21. On weekends and public holidays, the lift works for an hour longer. Cars run every 15 minutes, the cost of one-way travel is 1.7 euros, round trip 3.10 euros.
