Views from Ponte Pennavaria, Ragusa
The old and new parts of the city are separated by the deep canyon of Santa Domenica (vallata Santa Domenica) and this bridge is the main highway between them. The first bridge, the Ponte dei Cappuccino or Ponte Padre Scopetta, was built in the middle of 1848, and in the first half of the 20th century it could no longer cope with the return traffic. In 1923, the municipality announced a competition for the design of the second bridge, which was won by engineer Aurelio Aureli from Rome, and the construction was funded by Deputy Government Minister and Ragusa native Filippo Pennavaria. This concern for his hometown was immortalized in the name of the bridge, although locals often call it the New Bridge (Ponte Nuovo), and the first bridge, respectively, the Old Bridge (Ponte Vecchio). The length of the bridge is 132 meters, the maximum height is 40 meters. The bridge is 10 meters wide, with a 6-meter carriageway and wide sidewalks. The bridge overlooks the Santa Domenica Valley, Ponte dei Cappuccino and Pone Papa Giovanni. On the other side below is the Giovanni Paolo II terraced park. The bridge is used for various exhibitions, and today it was possible to see the projects of young architects here.
