Church of Santa Maria Dell'Arco, Messina

In the middle part of Viale della Libertà, I am a house with ferry piers, there is one of the oldest churches in the city. In 1596, the Archbishop of Messina Francesco Velardes de La Cuenca brought from Naples a painting depicting a miracle that occurred in the town of Archi. In 1450, drops of blood appeared on the painting of the Virgin in the local church. Since then, this image has spread a lot in the Campaign under the name of Santa Maria dell'Arco. The name of the town of Archi comes from the Roman aqueduct, in the image of a miracle it was transformed into an Arch. The painting depicts a miracle that occurred in 1450, when the image of the Virgin bled to death. With the arrival of this painting, a parish was founded outside the city walls of Messina, in the village of San Leone. The earthquake of 1908 destroyed the church, and now we see a new building. During the disaster, a Crucifix miraculously survived, which can now be seen in the transept of the church. The church is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 12:30 and from 16:30 to 18:00. On weekdays, Mass is held at 18:00, on holidays at 8, 11 and 18.
