Agrigento-Palermo Train

Meanwhile, my train for Palermo had arrived. As you can see, modern railcars have spaces for bicycles.

In anticipation of landing a high-tech looked at the coupler. As I understand it, the device not only connects the cars, but also automatically connects them with pneumatic and electric lines. On Russian Railways, the Autoset is just a massive piece of iron, and communications are connected by specially trained people.

Finally, the doors were unlocked, and I got inside the car. The train turned out to be a pass-through, without inter-car passages and vestibules.

Comfortable upholstered seats, much wider than in an airplane, headrests with "ears".

At the window, a folding table with a drawer and a garbage compartment, under it two electric sockets.

The driver's cab is separated from the passenger compartment by light partitions with glass - apparently, they are not afraid of terrorists.

Of course, the cabin equipment is not like an airliner, it is quite in the spirit of the time.

The train was on its way precisely on schedule, and the rolling landscape of northwestern Sicily began to flicker through the window.

As you know, Sicily was the granary of the Roman Empire, which supplied grain not only to the center, but also to distant provinces.

Меня поразило то, что распаханы даже довольно крутые склоны холмов, пашни кончаются только у горных скал.

Станция Кампофранко, это маленький городок, основанный в 1549 году и имеющий богатые традиции.

Слева по ходу поезда виден горный хребет Сиканти (Monti Sikanti) .

Здесь каменистые почвы и пшеничные поля сменили пастбища.

Тем временем небо затянуло тучами и пошел дождь. Кое где видны следы бурных потоков.

Горные долины Монти Сикани засажены фруктовыми деревьями.

Станция Роккапалумба-Айла (Roccapalumba-Aila), в сотне метров от которой можно увидеть заброшенный микрорайон из нескольким одинаковых четырехэтажных домов. В шестидестые-семидесятые годы здесь разрабатывалось месторождение серы, а эти дома были шахтерским поселком. За поселком видна скала Ла Рокка, в расщелинах которой гнездится множество птиц. Сам городок Роккапалумба находится чуть дальше, за ним  высится гора,. вершине которой есть маленькая церковь, и что самое удивительное - любительская обсерватория, построенная по инициативе жителей близлежащей деревеньки Регальджиофоли.

Closer to the Tyrrhenian sea coast, the area became more densely populated.

About two hours after leaving Agrigento, the train was already speeding through the outskirts of Palermo.
