It is not entirely clear what this structure is, but it is very likely that its function is related to its position at an important junction along the Via Appia, which actually starts from the nearby San Sebastiano Gate and which, before the construction of the Aurelian Walls, started from the nearby Capena Gate. The current structure is probably medieval, dating from the 11th or 12th century, but probably stands on an ancient compitum, or newsstand, dedicated to the Lari Compitali, ancient Roman deities who protected travelers usually stationed in the vicinity of the Biwi. As we have already said, the structure is actually located along the Via Appia between the ancient Servian walls and the Aurelian Walls.
