Kramer's Bank from the Movie 'Vabank' (Złoty Róg), Piotrków Trybunalski
This house is sure to be recognized by everyone who watched the wonderful criminal comedy of Julius Mahulsky "Vabank".
According to the story, the action takes place in Warsaw, but it was impossible to recreate the pre-war atmosphere in a completely destroyed and rebuilt city it is impossible, therefore the film was shot in łódź and piotrków Trybunalski, which has preserved the architecture of the first half of the 20th century.
Some episodes of the film show a building on Tadeusz Kosciuszko square. This is where the Bank of Gustav Kramer was located, which was robbed by Kwinto and his friends in a very original way.
In the same building, on the side of Sieradzka street, a doorway was also filmed, where Duńczyk went to investigate the possibility of entering the building.
As you can see, the wooden gates of the 30s have been preserved to this day.
The courtyard is also easily recognizable from the footage from the film.
Only wooden galleries in our time have already been replaced with metal, and at the entrance, where the Duńczyk went, there was a code lock.
But the scene on the roof, from which the noble robbers descended into the chimney, was not filmed here, in the film it is without overhangs and hidden behind the parapet.
Between the main entrance and the gateway there is a "Kwinto Bench", installed in 2015. By the way, in the next house, on Seradzka 8, the scene of the jeweler's robbery was shot, with which the film begins.
In addition to its cinematic fame, the house is of architectural interest and is included in the list of cultural monuments of the Lodz Voivodeship. The building was built in 1890 in the "Parisian style", with wide balconies made of figured cast iron and decorated with stucco. The first floor was occupied by shops, on the second and third residential premises. The courtyard with galleries is atypical for Polish architecture and resembles Odessa courtyards. For a long time, the first floor was occupied by the grocery store "Złoty Róg" , and large gilded letters hung over the entrance for many years after its closure, so that's what the locals call it now.
