Bilbao. Night walk along the embankment. part 2
We continue our night walk along the embankment of the river Nervion. The city's most famous building is the Museum of modern art, a branch of the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in new York, which opened in 1997.. The creation of North American architect Frank Gary in the deconstructivist style is a giant flower, whose petals form exhibition halls. Next to the Museum, the river is crossed by the salve bridge , also an original structure designed by engineer John Fuller and opened in 1972.
The Campo Volantin pedestrian bridge (Puente del Campo Volantin), more commonly called the " Subisuri "(Basque. Zubizuri, "White bridge").
The author of the project is Santiago Calatrava, also known for the Bilbao airport project and the fact that all his works are white in color.
The curved bridge is suspended from a steel arch, and the pedestrian walkway is made of glass slabs. This original solution was not very successful - in the rain, the surface became very slippery, so the Central part is now covered with an elastic material.
(Joaquín Rucoba).
С муниципального моста посмотрим на перспективу реки. Сейчас время прилива, потому воды Нервьона текут вспять, а их уровень поднимается.
Municipal bridge.
Along the promenade along Arenal Park, we will reach Plaza Arriaga-Areatza, where the Arriaga theater is located.
We will cross to the left Bank on the Arenal bridge.
And finally, we will admire the night station Concordia (Estación Concordia-Bilbao), which is also called "Santander station". This station belongs to the FEVE narrow gauge network. The building was built in the art Nouveau style in 1902 and is a brilliant masterpiece of the "Belle Epoque". The authors of the project are engineer Valentin Gorbena and architect Severino Achucarro( Valentin Gorbeñ, Severino Achúcarro), construction began in 1876, the station was opened in 1902.
