Warehouse of Felix Sáenz, Málaga
The southwestern part of the Historic Center (Centro Histórico) is a shopping area with many shops and boutiques. Its center is the Félix Sáenz Square (Plaza de Félix Sáenz), named after the businessman and politician who made a great contribution to the development of Malaga. He was born in the province of Rioja in 1859, and moved to Malaga in 1877, where he worked his way up from a clerk to a textile magnate. In 1912, he commissioned the architect Manuel Rivera Vera to build an Art Nouveau (Modernist) building for a warehouse and a fabric store. For this purpose, a plot was purchased where a food market was previously located. The construction was completed in 1914, and the Scienca stores operated there until 1987. Over time, the square was named after the entrepreneur, and the building is still called Warehouses of Félix Sáenz (Almacenes Félix Sáenz). Then the building was resold several times, in 2005 a project was launched to transform the trading house into luxury residential apartments. In 2011, the work was completed, as a result, the three upper floors became residential, and the two lower floors were occupied by the H&M store. In 2000, the avant-garde sculpture Golden House for Birds (Casa dorada para pájaros) by Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa was installed in the center of the square.
