Hagia Sophia. Columns

At the entrance, we will pay attention to the dark columns, located four to the left and right in the semicircular niches of the main nave (exedra). The columns were carved out of porphyry and borrowed from some Roman temple - at the time of construction of Sofia, the technology for making solid columns from porphyry was lost. The second tier of the central part is supported by columns of Thessalian marble.
