Belvedere of Serrara
The small village attracts tourists with a viewing platform called Belvedere, which is just a stone's throw from the Serrara bus stop. You can get here from almost anywhere on the island by bus on the CS and CD ring lines.
Located 366 meters above sea level, the Belvedere offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in Ischia.
From the Belvedere, you can see the entire western part of the island.
Here you can find the beaches and thermal parks of Marronti, the wonderful resort town of Sant'Angelo and the rocky capes of Panza. I'll tell you more about what you can see from the Belvedere in the next article.
There are two monuments on the Belvedere. One of them was installed in 1992 on the occasion of the establishment of partnership relations between the municipality of Serrara-Fontana and the Bavarian city of Waldkirchen.
Monument to Salvo D'Aquisto, a native of Serrara, who saved the lives of 22 civilians in 1943. After two German soldiers were killed by a grenade explosion in Rome, the SS took random people, civilians, hostage, demanding the extradition of those who allegedly threw the grenade. In fact, the explosion was accidental, and was used as an excuse for reprisals. On September 23, the hostages were taken outside the city to the Palidoro Tower to be shot, and under the supervision of Italian Carabinieri, they were forced to dig a mass grave. Carabinieri Sergeant d'Aquisto, knowing that innocent people would be shot, released them and was killed by the SS while covering their escape. In 1983, Salvo was canonized by the Catholic Church. The monument is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the hero.
La Floreana restaurant is located right on the Belvedere, with an even more spectacular view from the high terrace.
