St. Stephen's Cathedral in Metz (Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Metz)

The Cathedral of the capital of Lorraine (Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Metz) was built in the 14th century, but its history began almost a thousand years earlier. According to historians, the Gallo-Roman fortified settlement arose here in the 1st century AD, from 309 the city served as an imperial residence on the road between Lyon and Trier, and in 346 a bishopric appeared here. At the beginning of the fifth century, a sanctuary was built where the relics of St. Stephen were kept, who was lucky enough to survive after the Huns' raid led by Attila in 451. It was the only building in the city that was not looted.
