Roman walls (Muralla Romana). Garden of Saint Anthony (Jardin de Sant Antoni)
Starting my walk on the Champ de Mars, I skirted the city wall from the East and came out on the Rue Saint Anthony (Passeig Sant Antoni), where a part of the wall built by the Romans is still preserved.
Over time, the wall lost its defensive function and was used as a facade of residential buildings.
In the walls that remained intact to the full height, window openings were pierced, and where the upper part was destroyed, new walls were added.
Opposite the walls, there is a small garden of St. Anthony (Jardins de Sant Antoni on the map), named after the monastery located on this site, founded by Yeshe in 1299. The monastery belonged to the order of Mercy - mercedesrental. Here you can see one of the oldest monuments of Tarragona-the cross of Saint Anthony (Creu de Sant Antoni). The cross, with the image of Jesus on one side and the virgin Mary on the other, appeared in front of the city gate at the end of the 14th century, as evidenced by the record of receiving payment for the work of the master Dalmau Balcells (Dalmau Balcells) in 1388. In the early 17th century the cross was placed on a column, surmounted by a drum with bas-reliefs of saints, and on the basis of four sides emblem and embossed number 1608.
In the Park there was a shady corner with a fountain, which was very convenient, so it was very hot (December, however...).
Orange trees grow here at every step, at this time the fruits are already ripe , you can eat them, but they do not taste very good... there is no comparison with those that are sold in numerous fruit shops for a mere penny.
There is a staircase leading down from the garden, which leads to the sea - to the Fort de Reina and the beach of Mirakl, but there was no time to go there, so the plan was to visit the Upper town and visit the Cathedral.
