.The Church of Sant'Agata and the adjacent convent of the Order of Preachers of San Domenico di Guzman are a single monumental complex with different purposes of primitive religious buildings located on the Piazza San Domenico in Taormina. The church of Sant'Agata and the primitive palace (castle-baronial fortress) of the princes appeared in Features even before the foundation of the religious institution. In the Aragonese era, the synagogue and the Jewish cemetery (Giudecca near the Port of Catania) were documented and moved to another location.
Religious people put forward a request for the demolition of the buildings of the Jewish community to Pope Callixtus III, who, in turn, referred the matter to Alfonso V of Aragon, who intervened with an authorizing provision on December 31, 1456. The persecution and tragic expulsion of the community from the island took place on June 18, 1492, in accordance with the decree of Ferdinand the Catholic.
