Alexander Nevsky Lavra, St. Petersburg, autumn
The first monastery of St. Petersburg was founded by order of Tsar Peter the Great in 1710 and dedicated to Alexander Nevsky. Why Peter chose this Saint is explained simply - it was the height of the war with the Swedes, and to recall the victory over them of Prince Alexander in the battle of the Neva in 1240 was very timely and uplifting.
