Hintze Ribeiro Bridge, Leiria
To the left of the former barracks of the 7th Infantry Regiment is one of the oldest bridges over the Lis River in Leyri, built in the early eighteenth century, the Ponte Hintze Ribeiro.
The bridge was part of a flour mill, the building of which is located behind the bridge downriver. The bridge has two arched spans, under the large one there is a riverbed, under the small one there is a channel that supplies water from the dam to the mill's water wheel.
The bridge is named after the politician and reformer Ernesto Hintze Ribeiro, who served as Prime Minister in 1893-1897.
Between the dam and the bridge on the left bank of the river is a garden named after Amelia Pais, a writer and teacher of the local lyceum located opposite the bridge (Jardim Amélia Pinto Pais).
Downstream, the bridge offers views of the Vala Real Garden (Jardim da Vala Real). In fact, this is not a garden, but a flat sloping lawn with several trees along the shore.
The parapet of the embankment near the bridge is so ancient that vegetation has formed on it.
