Boca do Inferno (Hell's Throat Canyon) , Cascais

The Atlantic coast of Portugal is a steep cliff face, often over a hundred meters high, alternating with sandy beaches.

Rock formations have a different structure and density, so under the millennia-old influence of wind and water, they acquire the most amazing shapes.

The most famous creation of nature in the vicinity of Lisbon is the canyon near the resort town of Cascais, usually called "the Mouth of the devil". Another name, "Hell's throat" more accurately corresponds to the Portuguese "Boca do Inferno" - "mouth of hell" (on the map).

In rough weather, waves break into a narrow gap between the rocks, making a roar that is amplified by the sheer walls of the canyon. Today the weather was calm, so the lapping of rolling waves didn't make much of an impression.

The surf at the mouth of the Gullet was much more impressive.

On the fence, located at a fair distance from the cliff, you can imagine the strength of the waves in fresh weather.

But today you can safely stand with a fishing rod at the water's edge.

You can get to the "Gullet" from the resort town of Cascais, the canyon is located a little more than a kilometer from the city fortress, and two from the train station.
