Plaza de la Provincia, Vitoria-Gasteiz

This public space is located on the western boundary of the medieval quarter (El Campillo) and is considered the official center of the city. Festivals and cultural events are held here, and today they have begun setting up a stage in front of the Palace building.

The pedestrian streets Calle Diputación and Calle Siervas de Jesús adjoin the square, but this place gives the impression of a quiet and cozy corner, in contrast to the bustling Plaza de la Inmaculada. Tourists rarely visit here, and that’s a real pity.

The architectural dominant feature of the square is the building of the legislative assembly of the province of Álava (Palacio de la Diputación Foral de Álava), but local residents prefer to call it the Provincial Palace. Now it is impossible to find out which came first - the Palace or the square. I will describe it, as well as other objects on the square, in detail in the following articles.

On the right side of the square, there is a monument to Mateo Benito de Moraz, a famous Basque lawyer.

Above the rooftops rises the elegant spire of the Church of St. Peter; the square offers the best view of it.
