Bilbao. The Church of St. Francis of Assisi (Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís)
Next to Plaza Zabalburu, on Calle Hurtado de Amezaga, is the Gothic Church of San Fratzisca, sometimes called the" Fifth parish " (Quinta parroquia on the map). The first stone in the Foundation of the Church was laid on June 30, 1890, in the same year, the author of the project, an architect from Luis de Landecho y Urriés, received for his work the Gold medal of the art exhibition in Madrid. The temple is built of Sandstone and has the appearance of a medieval Gothic Cathedral.
The Church was consecrated on November 9, 1902, before the corner towers with Gothic spires were ready, so a temporary wooden belfry was built for the consecration. The towers were completed only in 1906.
The circular rose window on the facade was completed after another 3 years, with geometrically strict stone lace work by the architect Manuel María Smith.
The porch, made in the form of an arch, access to the stairs is buried by a wrought-iron twisted gate. Above the double entrance doors, separated by a statue of Francis of Assisi, there are 8 sculptures of other saints in shallow niches.
Under the arch is a Venetian mosaic depicting the death of the Saint of San Francisco of Assisi. This design somewhat violates the purity of neo-Gothic, introducing an element of eclecticism.
On October 14, 2000, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi was declared a cultural monument of the Basque Country.
