Park of Edward VII and Marquis de Pombal Square

The largest Park in Lisbon was opened in 1903 and bears the name of Edward VII (Parque Eduardo VII, on the map). Initially, it was planned to extend the Avenue of Liberty( Avenida da Liberdade), which rested on the Marquis de Pombal square, for which a huge area was cleared. Later, this idea was abandoned and a Park was laid out on the site, named after the English king Edward VII, who had visited Portugal a year earlier to renew the Union between the countries, signed in 1386 (the Treaty of Windsor).

The Central lawn, along which the cobblestone paths stretch, is planted with shrubs, in the form of a straight-sided meander ornament. The current configuration of the Park was completed in 1942 by the Portuguese architect Francisco de Armal. On this day, along the paths, you could see the tents of the Lisbon book fair, which is held here annually at the end of April.

In the upper part of the Park, a monument to the April 25 Revolution was erected in 1997.

The work of the sculptor John Cutileiro has become the subject of heated controversy because of its phallic forms.

Аэропорт Лисабона расположен в черте города, всего в 4х километрах от парка Эдуарда IV, траектории взлетающих самолетов проходят над этой частью города.

С высоты холма просматривается перспектива центра города, выходящего к реке Тежу.

В северо-западной части парка, на территории бывшей каменоломни, находится маленький ботанический сад, где обитают петухи и куры.

Дорожки парка ведут вниз, на площадь маркиза де Помбала (Praça Marquês de Pombal, на карте), в простонародье "Ротунда" - что означает "круглая площадь". Это одна из важнейших транспортных развязок Лиссабона, здесь сходятся несколько веток метро, а вокруг площади расположены известные отели.

На площади, слева от парка есть киоск, где можно купить однодневный тур по окрестностям Лиссабона - в Синтру, Мафру, Обидуш.
