Church of the Incarnation

The city wall, built by King Fernando, ran along the eastern border of Praça Luís de Camões Square in the Middle Ages. The St. Catherine's Gate led to the current Largo do Chiado Square. At the beginning of the 18th century, the wall that prevented the expansion of the city was demolished, and two Baroque churches were built in place of the gate towers. On the right side is the parish church of the Incarnation (Igreja Da Nossa Senhora Da Encarnação), on the facade of which you can see two sculptures that once decorated the gate. The church was severely damaged during the earthquake of 1755 and as a result of restoration received a facade richly decorated with stucco in Rococo style. The interiors of the church are decorated with marble and stucco, the altar is decorated with a sculpture of Our Lady of the Incarnation by Joaquim Machado de Castro. The wooden arched ceiling in the center of the nave contains an image of Our Lady of the Annunciation, and the painting above the altar depicts the dramatic Mystery of the Incarnation. Next to the main entrance is the Chapel of St. Maria Goretti, which displays contemporary contemporary art..
