Along the Ligurian coast
The next day early in the morning we left the French resort town of Menton and headed towards the Italian border.
On the western outskirts of Genoa, cross the viaduct over the river Polcevera (Viadotto Polcevera), opened on 4 September 1967. The national Autostrada A10, which is part of the European highway E80 passes across the bridge. This overpass is better known as the Morandi Bridge (Ponte Morandi), named after the author of the project. Construction began in 1963, the contractor Società Italiana per Condotte d'acqua. The length of the bridge is 1102 meters, the roadway is located at an altitude of 45 meters above sea level, the height of the three pillars is 90 meters. The length of the suspension spans of 210 meters. On August 14, 2018, around noon, the Western pillar collapsed and about 200 meters of the bridge located above the river and railway tracks, killing more than 40 people. We passed on it in January 4, 2012, and already then this construction made impression of the thrown object on which for some reason there is an intensive movement.
