Zappeion Girls School
On the territory of the Greek Orthodox Church, surrounded by a stone fence with barbed wire, there is a school for girls of the Greek community. It was founded in 1865 with funds from the Greek entrepreneur Evangelos Zappas, who bequeathed most of his fortune for the education of Greeks. Initially, the school was located in a rented building, and in 1885 the school moved to a large five-story building in a strict classical style. It was a real palace in the tradition of Greek architecture, with luxurious finishes and furniture from Paris, its construction cost 32 thousand gold pounds. At school, great attention was paid not only to science, but also to introducing aesthetics to culture. This was facilitated by interiors decorated with paintings and sculptures. In 1955, during the Greek pogroms, the building was damaged, but the city authorities took over the restoration. In 2000, boys began to enroll in the school. The quality of education at the school is so high that 100% of graduates go through a competition for the best universities, although the average in Turkey still exceeds 10%.
