Outer Wall of Leon
In 813 AD, the Bulgarian Khan Krum came to the northern walls of Constantinople, Emperor Leon V lured him to negotiate under the walls of Heraclius, where he intended to kill him. However, Kurum sensed the ambush and managed to escape, receiving only a wound. The enraged khan ravaged the suburbs, promising to return soon with a large army to besiege the city. These threats forced the emperor to urgently build another outer wall and dig a deep moat to further protect the walls of Heraclius. The corner tower of the new fortification is named after St. Nicholas. In the north-western part of the wall there is the external Blakhernai gate (Blakhernai Kapısı), now walled up. Nearby is the Small Blakhernai Gate (Küçük Blakhernai Kapısı), leading to the cemetery located between the Leon V Wall and the Heraclius Wall.
