Upper Gate (Top Kapı), Theodosian Walls
The Top Kapı Gate is located between Towers 65 and 66, a block from the Kara Ahmed Pasha Mosque and was the entrance from the south side of the Lykos Valley. In the Byzantine era, they were called the Pempton Gate. In many sources, they bear the name of Saint Romanos (Romanos Kapısı), and they really were called that for a long time.In 2003, a plaque was discovered between towers 59 and 60, informing that the gate of St. Roman was there.The passage in the outer wall has a width of 3.10 and widens to 3.90 m, the wall thickness here is 4.70-4.75 m. The gate in the main wall has a width of 3.10 m and a height of 5.75 m from the outside, 3.90 m and 7.94 m from the city side, respectively. From the city side. Now there is little left of the original appearance of the gate, they have been rebuilt many times and only fragments of Byzantine masonry can be seen. The last restoration was in the late fifties of the last century. Then two bronze figures of guards were installed on the inside of the gate. Only the first tier of tower 65 remains, Tower 66 was restored in 1994, but the staircase leading to it was only partially restored.
