Maria Carmine church (Chiesa di Maria del Carmine), Ischia Porto
At the crossroads Via Gian Batisto Vico and Via Cilento there is a small church (map), which belongs to the parish of Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of Ischia Porto).
This сhurch was built in the late 17th century, but from its original appearance preserved only a stone portal with a coat of arms.
Ceramic plate reports that the Church was restored recently - in 2011.
The neat two-tiered bell tower is also a novelty, without pomposity and monumentality.
The interior space is light, through to two windows under the vaulted ceiling and a large round window on the facade. Above the altar you can see a canvas of the 18th century, depicting Madonna and child. The author is unknown, but the style of the painting is typical of the Carmelita monasteries. In the niche of the right wall, behind the glass is a wooden statue of the Holy virgin Carmine, made in the 18th century.
The walls are decorated with modern ceramic paintings depicting biblical scenes: the ascent of Christ to Calvary,
removing him from the cross and mourning and other moments.
