Statue of the giant Tombatossals, Castellon de La Plana
After walking from Plaza Maria Agustina along Avenida de la Mare de Déu del Lledó for about half a kilometer, you will see an iron colossus rising right in the middle of the streets. This statue of a fabulous giant named Tombatossals (Monumento de Tombatossals), 20 meters high and weighing about 20 tons, was created by modern sculptor Melchor Zapata in 2003 and installed to mark the 750th anniversary of the city's founding.
The sculpture recreates the plot from the novel by Josep Pasqual Tirado, in which the brave and kind giant Tombatossals demolished mountains to make way for farmland. In the center of the resulting plain appeared the city of Castellon de la Plana.
