Castrense Church in the Citadel

The garrison church (Parroquia Castrense de la Ciutadella), built in 1720 in neoclassical style, is one of their few surviving structures of Ciutadella fortress. This is a small and surprisingly harmonious structure with a nave and side chapels, in the features of which you can guess the French school.

The building was built according to the plans of Prosper de Verboom, a military engineer and chief builder of the fortress, and the final design and management of the work was carried out by engineer Alexandre de Rez.

The dome and its base are lined with ceramic with a geometric pattern. The dome tiles are covered with centuries-old layers, only the bell tower pleases with bright colors. The dome turret is crowned only by a lightning protection pin, apparently, the cross has not been preserved.

A semicircular pediment with a simple round window is also topped with a bronze torch instead of a cross.

Very interesting are the entrance doors with well-preserved carved bas-reliefs and a wooden sculpture of an angel.

Whether there is an opportunity to look at the interiors - I do not know, I did not find any signs on the doors.
