Jardins de Laribal

The first attempt to improve the northern slope of Montjuic Mountain was made back in 1894, but the main work began only in 1917, when Barcelona was chosen as the venue for the International Fair of 1929. The construction was supervised by the Minister of Public Works and Transport Francesc Cambó, well-known French specialists were invited to lead the project: engineer Marià Rubió i Bellver led the construction work, the landscaping project was designed by landscape designer Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestie. A great contribution to the project was made by the director of parks and gardens of Barcelona Rubio i Tuduri (Rubió i Tudurí). The Gardens of Laribal are part of a large garden and park complex, they were built in 1922-24 inside the loop formed by the Passeig de Santa Madrona (known as part of the Formula 1 race track), at the bend of which there is an Ethnographic Museum. Previously, this plot belonged to the famous journalist and politician Josep Laribal (Josep Laribal), so the gardens bear his name. The classicist gardens occupy an area of 3.16 hectares and include mainly Mediterranean vegetation. To prevent soil leaching, a system of terraces with stairs and cascading fountains was created. Flower beds and paths are arranged on the terraces, gazebos made of brick and natural stone are built in open areas. Ceramic vases and tiles are used in the decoration.
