Museum of Almería (Museo Arqueológico de Almería)

The most important museum of the Almeria province is located in the Altamira area, on Carretera de Ronda, 91, two blocks from Placa de Barcelona (map). The Museum was founded on the initiative of the Belgian archaeologist Luis Siret y Cells (1860-1964), who worked in the vicinity of Almeria in the late 19th century. The artifacts found by him are in some museums in Europe, including the British Museum, the scientist wished that part of the objects remained in the place of their discovery. However, the first small archaeological exhibition opened in Almeria only during the Second Republic, in 1934.

In 2006, the province received a real Archaeological museum, which is located in a spacious building. The work of architects Ignacio García Pedrosa and Ángela García de Paredes received several awards at European design competitions. The museum has three floors, and its central part is a column, which is a geological section of sedimentary rocks (stratigraphic column).

On one side of the column arranged a huge hourglass, symbolizing the infinity of the flow of time.
