Plaza de Santa Maria and Around
Tonight I planned to visit the Santa Cruz quarter, and I started my walk at the Plaza de Santa Maria, the benefit of the hotel La Milgrosa, where I stayed, is located on its corner. The main attraction of the square is the church of the same name (Basilica de Santa Maria d'alicant), the oldest in Alicante. During the period of Muslim rule, the main mosque was located on this site. After the Reconquista, the mosque was converted into a Christian church and consecrated in 1248 by King Alfonso X. In the period of the 14th and 16th centuries, the former mosque underwent a significant reconstruction in the Valencian Gothic style. Now we see a symmetrical facade with two towers, but the left tower was built in 1713. At the same time, the portals were decorated in the Baroque style, made by sculptor Juan Borja (Juan Bautista Borja). The square also houses the Museum of Modern Art (Museo de Arte Contemporaneo), to the right of it a staircase leads to the Plaza del Puente, where there is a very interesting scientific and technical Museum of Water (Museo del Aquas).
